This position directs the activities of the payroll management team and respective staff members. Develops and controls all tasks necessary to accomplish the organization's payroll processing objectives, including relationships with internal and external customers, auditors, and state, local, and federal agencies. Ensures that payroll processes meet Financial Reporting Controls (FRC) as well as Risk Management requirements for Business Continuance. More than 50% of the Senior Director's time is spent on corporate payroll strategy, planning, communications, and training the payroll function and related services.

This role is based in Salt Lake City, UT, and will require relocation.


This system-wide position reports to the Vice President - Accounting Systems and Tax, and directly supervises three leaders, and indirectly supervises 31 payroll professionals and clerical payroll employees. This position may interface with all levels of Intermountain management including senior management, vice presidents, administrators, CFOs, directors, and department managers. This position interfaces with internal and external auditors. This position partners with key stakeholders of payroll processes including Human Resources, IT development and support, IT Business Applications, and Finance.

Job Essentials

Oversees the payroll operations of Intermountain

Oversees processing and payment of bi-weekly payroll including the recording of payroll financial transactions. Ensures that accounting of payroll activity is accurate and timely for each month-end close

Ensures that payroll transactions are in compliance with federal and state regulations and Intermountain's policies and procedures

Provides direction and ensures that payroll taxes are paid and reported according to regulations and requirements

Oversees the annual Form W-2 reporting process ensuring completeness and accuracy in the reported amounts

Establishes and standardizes payroll practices in written policies and procedures, as appropriate

Provides direction to ensure that payroll has an adequate and functioning business continuity plan

Oversees processing of all involuntary deductions for all of Intermountain

Business Owner for payroll and time and attendance systems

Provides direction and approval pertaining to changes to payroll and time and attendance systems. Ensures that all changes and functionality of the systems meets the standards pertaining to payroll requirements

Coordinates closely with key stakeholders including Human Resources, IT, Accounting and Finance to ensure that the payroll systems are functioning as required by regulation and policy

Works with other internal and external individuals to help ensure a sound internal control environment, to safeguard payroll systems and data, and protect assets

Responsible for managing payroll data

Coordinates payroll data requests to make sure payroll data is safeguarded and adequate for the requestor's business needs

Provides direction and strategy for future requirements and tools pertaining to payroll data

Directs training of payroll personnel

Oversees training of payroll coordinators to provide direction and standardization of current payroll and HR procedures and policies

Oversees and responds to requirements and findings from internal and external auditors and FRC controls

Accountable for all payroll FRC controls and attests quarterly to the adequacy of the controls

Leads or participates in projects related to system-wide payroll initiatives or support projects of others

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree in accounting, finance or business administration. Master's must be obtained through an accredited institution. Education is verified

Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance or business and holds the credentials of a Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Bachelor's degree must be obtained through an accredited institution. Education is verified

- and -

Nine years of experience in payroll or closely-related field working in a role requiring a high degree of organization, attention to detail, independent decision making, and accuracy

- and -

Four years of experience in a supervisory or department management role

- and -

Experience in a role requiring self-directed management of a diverse and heavy workload, and the ability to function with minimal supervision and adapt to frequent interruptions

- and -

Experience using word processing, spreadsheet, database, internet, e-mail, and scheduling applications

- and -

Experience in a role requiring effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

Master's degree in accounting or business administration

Certified Payroll Professional (CPP)

Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Experience working with Workday's payroll module

Experience working with UKG Workforce Central and UKG Dimensions
