Discipline Manager/Client Account Manager (Civil and Architectural) Job Description Services Provided in this Discipline Area Services provided in this discipline include (but may not be limited to): 1. Design of Pedestrian Facilities 10. Design of Alternative Transportation Facilities 11. Design of Sustainable Stormwater Solutions 12. Design of Erosion and Sediment Control Systems 13. Design of Parking Facilities 14. Feasibility Studies for Prospective Development 15. Existing Conditions Assessments and Evaluation of Sites 16. Construction Project Management 17. Design of Building Architectural Features 18. Design of Roof Replacements/Rehabilitations Summary/Objective of the Position The position of Discipline Manager/Client Account Manager is a highly billable position and the majority of the discipline manager functions will be facilitated through project work. The discipline manager is also expected to perform technical tasks on projects. Following are the objectives of the position: 1. Provide technical and thought leadership to Client firm staff and clients in this discipline area. 2. Facilitate staff development in this area. 3. Facilitate the growth and development of this discipline at Client firm. 4. Provide production resources and tools to Client firm in execution of projects in this discipline area. Responsibilities/Essential Functions of the Position Following are the essential functions of the position. Serves as Client firms technical lead in executing the performance of the services included in this discipline area. a. Assists project managers and CAMs in the development of technical scope of work, budget, and schedule associated with the projects in this discipline. b. Serves in responsible charge of all aspects of the discipline and has significant management responsibilities to execute the responsibilities and duties of the position. Specific authority limits include but are not restricted to the following: i. To hire personnel previously approved. ii. To exercise company disciplinary policies and measures including termination with reference to personnel. iii. To perform Career Development and performance reviews with staff. 2. Mentors and develops Client firm staff in the various skill sets necessary to execute the various service areas within this discipline. a. Maintains personal development and competencies necessary to function as Client firms technical and thought leader in this discipline. b. Identifies, recruits, and mentors staff with skills and interests consistent with this discipline. c. Provides the environment to support personnel training. 3. Facilitates the growth and development of the discipline at Client firm. a. Remains abreast of the trends and opportunities impacting the various service areas. b. Develops and grows Client firms capabilities in the various service areas within this discipline. c. Identifies and develops project opportunities for new work and/or expanded services for new and established clients for this discipline. d. Works closely with Business Development and Marketing staff to pursue business in the discipline area. e. Develops marketing and sales plans related to this discipline. f. Assists in meeting company marketing and sales plan goals especially as they relate to discipline. g. Works closely with Vice President " Operations, President, COB/CEO, PMs and CAMs related to discipline area services for their projects and pursuits. h. Develops proposal strategies for opportunities in this discipline that utilize Companys strengths and innovative thinking to gain a competitive advantage. 4. Ensures client quality expectations are met. 5. Determines equipment, software, information, communications, etc., needed for the discipline. 6. Conducts personnel performance activities. 7. Participates when appropriate in company-wide task forces and committees. 8. Handles client technical questions and complaints through the PM, handles clients complaints politely and efficiently, follows procedure to solve client technical problems in collaboration with PM, maintains pleasant and professional image. 9. Is attentive to detail and accuracy, is committed to excellence, looks for improvements continuously, monitors quality levels, finds root cause of quality problems, owns/acts on quality problems. Is responsible for the development of doing the job right the first time culture for staff in this discipline. Competencies of the Person Holding this Position 1. Possesses strong technical expertise in this discipline. 2. Possesses proficiency in design software. 3. Expresses ideas and thoughts verbally with clarity and persuasion. 4. Expresses ideas and thoughts in written form, clearly and informatively. 5. Listens with genuine interest, encourages discussion, and does not monopolize conversations. 6. Provides timely and effective communications with team members regarding project status and expectations. 7. Accepts diversity of opinions, is unafraid to let people speak their minds, and solicits different views. 8. Develops effective project work plans: a. Clearly defines goals and the actions required to accomplish them. b. Considers possible changes, constraints or other obstacles that might impact plans. c. Accurately estimates time and resources needed to accomplish tasks. 9. Establishes Relationships: a. Effectively relate to all kinds of people regardless of background. b. Finds topics and common interests that he/she can use to build rapport with others. 10. Leverages Opportunities: a. Scans the environment for opportunities to grow the discipline or accelerate performance. b. Encourages people to exploit chances to drive the business forward. 11. Services Clients: a. Works toward the goal of having clients view us as the technical expert in this field. b. Stays aware of client technical needs, concerns and satisfaction. c. Responds promptly to client technical questions and requests in cooperation with PM. d. Effectively manages client technical expectations. Supervisory Responsibility of the Position This position directly supervises all staff within this discipline. Work Environment/Expected Hours of Work 1. This job generally operates in a professional office environment. 2. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. 3. This position regularly requires long hours and occasional weekend work. 4. Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some projects may require more out-of-the-area and overnight travel. Required Education and Experience Bachelors degree from an ABET accredited program and Professional Licensure is required. Masters degree or equivalent is desired. Experience This position requires a minimum of ten years experience in this discipline, including five years of direct client interaction and knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, and five years supervisory experience. Certifications/Registrations Professional registration/certification (PE, PG, PLS) desired. Other Knowledge and Skills This position requires superior client interrogation skills and in-depth knowledge of company offerings and operations.
