Job Description:

US ITER is a ten year, -$4 Billion, Department of Energy multi-laboratory project that executes the United States (US) contributions to the ITER Project in France. The US is a non-host partner in the seven-member international collaboration to design and construct a fusion device aimed at establishing the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy. The US is responsible for the design, fabrication, acceptance testing, and delivery of the various systems within its scope. This position may support multiple teams within that scope. Purpose: We are seeking a Sr. Vacuum Engineer who will perform and lead the design and integration of components for ITER Vacuum Systems and related subsystems. The position involves working with US and international contributors to ensure that the design conforms to physics requirements, engineering criteria, integrated controls requirements and engineering and building interfaces. Additional responsibilities include design review preparation and the development of product specifications and statements of work for procurement. Major Duties/Responsibilities:

• Perform all aspects of vacuum system design within the ITER facility, including requirements management, interface control, specification development, base calculations, statement of work preparation, and design review preparation
• Participate in technical review of final design documents and drawings including Process Flow Diagrams, Control/Logic Diagrams, Process & Instrumentation Diagrams, Technical Specifications, analysis, calculations, and other design documentation
• Write technical specifications and contribute to drawing production associated with the assembly of ITER components
• Direct technicians and crafts in any required R&D testing of vacuum systems mechanical elements.
• Process and submit technical documents through the US ITER and IO document management systems. Basic Qualifications:
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the design, construction, and operation of Low, Medium and High Vacuum hardware and related control systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Thorough knowledge of operating principles of vacuum pumps, pressure gauges, and vacuum valves, and an understanding of how to select appropriate vacuum equipment and materials for specific vacuum environments
  • Prior experience working with engineers and designers responsible for vacuum and associated control systems
  • Working knowledge of CAD software and experience gathering information from engineering models and drawings
  • Must be highly motivated, self-directed, and able to work in a team environment
  • Must have effective problem solving, time management, and communication and organizational skills Preferred Qualifications:
    • MS degree in mechanical engineering or related technical field with 8+ years of experience in design, construction and operation of vacuum, cryogenics hardware and related control systems.
    • Familiarity or experience with fusion energy technology, and/or large electromechanical devices is desirable
    • Knowledge of US ITER and ITER Organization (IO) procedures is highly desirable Work Direction and Interfaces: Reports to the Team Lead, Std. Vacuum Components and Roughing Pumps. Provides direction to engineers, designers, and analysts, and provides vendor and subcontract support. Must be capable of representing the status of activities to the US ITER Project Office and ITER Organization. The engineer shall be capable of working with the following: US ITER WBS groups, US ITER procurement, US ITER Quality Assurance, and ITER International Organization members. Reports to the Team Lead, Std. Vacuum Components and Roughing Pumps, for technical direction. Measures Of Effectiveness:
      • Successfully provides a leadership role in performing design activities for the ITER Vacuum System and related subsystems.
